The first part of the 'Winnetou' trilogy was inspired by the same named novel by Karl May. During the construction of the Great Western Railroad in the American West in the mid-19th century, there are costly conflicts between settlers, the railway company, and neighboring Indian tribes. The criminal gang leader Santer (Mario Adorf) incites the construction manager, against the original intentions, to build the track through Apache territory in pursuit of a legendary gold mine on sacred Indian grounds. Old Shatterhand (Lex Barker), working as a surveyor for the company, sees through the plan and seeks contact with the Indians to join forces against the gangsters. When he manages to free their leader, Winnetou (Pierre Brice), from the stake of the hostile Kiowa and convince him of his good intentions, Santer's prospects start dwindling. However, the outlaw still has an ace up his sleeve.
