Gidon Carmel, Valerio Massucci - New album "The Flying Hippos"
An experimental journey blending percussive echoes with electronic landscapes.
November 28, 2024
Berlin-based drummer Gidon Carmel and sound engineer Valerio Massucci have collaborated on "The Flying Hippos," an album that originated from experimental recording sessions in an abandoned warehouse.
The project began with capturing drum patterns in a high-reverberation space, inspiring the duo to craft electronic compositions around these percussive elements.
The album comprises nine tracks, each named after a different animal, reflecting the unique sonic character of each piece. From the heavy beats of "Hogs" to the frenetic rhythms of "Ostriches," Carmel and Massucci explore diverse soundscapes, incorporating oriental motifs in "Wolves" and tribal elements in "Flamingos." The result is a 20-minute collection that serves as an "intriguing puzzle," leaving listeners eager for more.
