Fado Singer Telmo Pires Honors António Variações with a New EP.

Portuguese Fado singer Telmo Pires releases a 5-track EP in March of 2025 in tribute to António Variações. The first single from the project, “Voz-Amália-de-Nós,” was released on December 3—coinciding with what would have been the 80th birthday of the late music icon, who passed away in 1984.
Telmo Pires shares his special connection to the piece:
“Amália Rodrigues is like a beacon in Portuguese culture. It is this love for her art that connects António Variações and me. One line in the song says, ‘In your voice, we found the voice of all of us.’ That touches me deeply, and I know no one else who has moved me this much.”
The entire EP is produced and arranged by Tiago Machado, one of Portugal’s most respected producers, known for his work with Mariza on her hit “Gente da minha terra.”
In Pires’ version of “Voz-Amália-de-Nós”—originally written by Variações in 1983 and released on the album “Anjo da Guarda”—the melancholic depth of Luís Guerreiro’s Portuguese guitar meets a restrained sound design that gently incorporates the texture of choral voices.
Pires brings a distinct, contemporary interpretation to “Voz-Amália-de-Nós.” With his classically warm voice and deep Fado roots, he merges joy and melancholy in a way that reflects not only António Variações’ life, but the essence of all our lives.
