British singer-songwriter Roo Panes shares new single ‘Samalaman Bay’, the final preview of forthcoming album ‘The Summer Isles’ before its release on 24th March via Leafy Outlook/Believe UK.
Upbeat and optimistic, ‘Samalaman Bay’ recounts Roo’s discovery of an unassuming Scottish beach and was written to mark the unexpected, revelatory beauty of the moment. Drinking in everything from the vivid colours in the sand and the water to the sound of the sea as he watched storm clouds gather over the highlands on the horizon, Panes still finds his mind cast away from the beach to an absent loved one; ‘cos if I didn’t have you to come back to, I’d probably find it hard to leave.’
This understated consideration of separation and distance lends the song a bittersweet depth characteristic of Panes’ deft skills as both a songwriter and a storyteller. As sad as Roo might be that his loved one isn’t there to appreciate Samalaman Bay with him, this brief moment on the beach ‘illuminates’ Panes to the beauty of every moment they do have together. This delicate balance is mirrored perfectly in the composition of the song too, with Roo’s nylon string guitar accompanied by little more than a swaying calypso rhythm throughout, which the accomplished songwriter uses to great effect. ‘Samalaman Bay’ is a humble and heartfelt expression of ‘the childlike feeling of finding a little treasure’ but is also evocative of the turbulent weather that sometimes looms over paradise and the little lights we use to guide us safely back home.
Since releasing his debut album ‘Little Giant’ to critical acclaim in 2014, the Dorset-based artist has gone from strength to strength as a songwriter and performer, diligently honing his craft while his music continues to win over a constantly-evolving global fanbase, garnering millions of streams worldwide. The next phase of Panes’ life saw his songwriting take on a new shape in 2021, leading to a collection of beautiful releases which culminated in the stunning ‘Nightjar and the Nightingale’ EP, released on April 1st 2022.
