Editors frontman reimagines his songwriting in a stark and intimate solo debut
Best known as the voice and lyricist of Editors, Tom Smith steps into new territory with There Is Nothing In The Dark That Isn't There In The Light, his first solo album. Stripped of the band’s post-punk weight but retaining its emotional force, Smith presents a deeply personal collection of songs that reflect on grief, fatherhood, and the quiet moments that define us. Built around piano, minimal arrangements, and atmosphere, this record finds him at his most exposed – and perhaps most powerful.
The album was produced with Lee Russell and mixed by Alan Moulder, whose touch brings depth to these otherwise sparse and spacious compositions. “The Last Time I Saw You (Oma)” is a poignant tribute to his grandmother, while “Where the Light Gets In” offers a gentle lift towards hope. The album’s title – taken from a phrase Smith would tell his children to calm their fear of the dark – encapsulates the emotional balancing act at the heart of the record: one that refuses to shy away from pain, but still reaches for light.
"There Is Nothing In The Dark That Isn't There In The Light" is available now on all major platforms.
